Urge your minister to call for a moratorium on deep-sea mining at the ISA Council meeting in October and November. It’s not too late for our governments to stop this destructive industry before it begins and commit to a healthy ocean for people and planet.

Subject line: You can help stop deep-sea mining before it’s too late

Dear Minister,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the potential approval of deep-sea mining activities in international waters. Opening our ocean to a vast new frontier of industrial extraction that we do not need would have catastrophic consequences for people and planet.

As a member of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), your government bears the crucial responsibility of safeguarding our ocean from the destructive impacts that scientists warn would be inevitable and permanent were we to strip-mine the fragile deep seabed. Now is the time for you to seize this opportunity and take a firm stance against deep-sea mining. You can play a pivotal role in halting deep-sea mining by ensuring your country is present at the ISA, and calling for a moratorium on this destructive industry, actioning the commitments you have made to protect the blue heart of our planet. We need governments to show up and stand up at the ISA.

It is of utmost importance that humanity finds alternative ways to meet resource demands without endangering the health of the very systems that sustain us. By joining the ranks of ocean champions, you have the power to reject deep-sea mining and prioritize a sustainable future for future generations.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
